What Type of Oil Does a Hyundai Elantra Take?

2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Your Hyundai Elantra is one of the best sedans globally because of its fuel efficiency and reliability. You’ll want to keep it in great shape so it lasts longer. As such, Hyundai Elantra oil changes are one of the most important parts of vehicle maintenance.

Find out everything you need to know about the Hyundai Elantra oil type if you love doing oil changes at home or just want additional information. Read on!

Hyundai Elantra Recommended Oil

The manufacturer recommends full synthetic motor oil as the right Hyundai Elantra oil type. Depending on the engine type or model year you have, Hyundai recommends these oil types for Elantra, either 5W-20 or 5W-30.

Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil for Your Hyundai Elantra Oil Change

You have two choices with the Hyundai Elantra oil type for Harrisburg drivers: Conventional and Synthetic. Both types start as crude oil mined from the Earth. Then, after refinement, either type is ready for Newville cars.

Conventional oil costs less and is less refined than full synthetic oil and will need to be changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. However, conventional oil may not be the best choice for your Hyundai Elantra.

Synthetic oil costs more upfront, but the manufacturer recommends it as the Hyundai Elantra oil type. Synthetic oil contains additives, anti-oxidizers, and cleansers that help the oil last longer while keeping your engine parts in better shape. Synthetic oil can also last up to 10,000 miles before it needs to be changed.

How to Perform a Hyundai Elantra Oil Change

If you’re in a hurry, or if you just don’t want to get dirty, schedule service at our Mechanicsburg service center and have your oil changed. However, if you’re a DIYer and love performing your own oil changes, follow these steps to learn how to properly change the oil in your Hyundai Elantra.

  1. Buy either the 5W-20 or the 5W-30 in synthetic or conventional oil.
  2. Buy a Hyundai Elantra oil filter. You can get the oil and the filter from our parts department.
  3. Jack your Elantra up with a car jack or steel ramps.
  4. Secure your Elantra with jack stands or wheel blocks.
  5. Crawl under the front of your car using a dolly or rolling cart.
  6. Find the oil drain plug on the bottom of your oil pan underneath your engine. Look over your vehicle owner’s manual to find its exact location under your car.
  7. Place an oil basin or a large tub directly underneath the plug.
  8. Unscrew the plug and allow the old oil to drain out completely. This may take up to 15 minutes.
  9. When all the oil has drained, replace the plug.
  10. Locate your oil filter underneath your engine.
  11. Move the oil basin or tub underneath the filter.
  12. Remove the oil filter with an oil filter wrench. Expect a bit of extra oil to drain out when you remove the filter.
  13. Get your new filter and rub a bit of the new car oil around the rubber seal. This is an essential step to ensure your filter is watertight and easy to remove the next time you need an oil change.
  14. Set the new filter in place.
  15. Tighten the oil filter first by hand and then with the oil filter wrench.
  16. Come out from under your Elantra.
  17. Raise the hood and prop it open.
  18. Remove the cap to your oil well.
  19. Pour in the specified amount of new oil. This should be about 4.2 quarts for the Hyundai Elantra, but you can find the exact amount in your owner’s manual.
  20. Put the cap back on your oil well.
  21. Check the oil level by using the dipstick.
  22. If you’re still low, add another ounce and check the level again. Once you get a proper oil level reading, you’re good to go!
  23. Make sure you dispose of the old oil properly. Take it to an authorized used oil collection center, such as a car dealership or mechanic.
