Who Makes Hyundai?

If you’re like other Harrisburg Hyundai owners, you’ve probably asked the question, “Where is Hyundai made, or who owns Hyundai?” The truth is, the Hyundai brand has been around much longer than most Newville vehicle owners know. In fact, Hyundai has a long history and has traveled a long way to arrive at the levels of success at which it exists today. In this article, we’ll go over who owns Hyundai and where its cars are made before arriving at local Dillsburg lots to join the large collection of new and used vehicles available for your satisfaction.

Who Owns Hyundai?

Established in 1947 under the name Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co., Hyundai Motor Company was created by Chung Ju-Yung. Established in 1967, Hyundai Motor Co. (HMC) is currently the market leader in car sales in Korea and sells to 190 countries worldwide.

Many Newville Hyundai owners believe that the automaker still has one sole owner. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The company has grown extensively since its humble beginnings and is now owned by the Hyundai Motor Group, which consists of a group of affiliated companies connected through various stock and shareholding arrangements.

Where is Hyundai Made?

Where are Hyundai cars made? Ulsan, on the southeastern coast of Korea, is home to Hyundai Motor Company’s massive, state-of-the-art integrated vehicle manufacturing complex. Hyundai’s Namyang Technology Research Center was completed in 1996, and it has a full-fledged testing facility with a 2.8-mile oval test track and a brand-new $40 million aeroacoustic wind tunnel. In the same year, HMC started making cars at its cutting-edge facility in Asan, South Korea, which is located to the southeast of Seoul.

There are now ten research facilities under Hyundai’s management, including eight in Korea and four abroad (Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Hyundai California Design Center in Fountain Valley, California, to name a few).

Entering the American Market

Hyundai wouldn’t actually begin selling cars in the American market until 1986, which seemed to be the perfect time for the manufacturer. There was a huge gap in the market since most automakers had moved on from the budget segment to focus on more luxurious, higher-priced models. College students and young families, who are often the first in their families to own a car, had a hard time locating reasonably priced vehicles that fit their criteria.

Hyundai released a compact version of their popular Excel model in America in 1986. A quick response from consumers led to the sale of the 100,000th Excel by Hyundai Motor America in just seven months. A record number of imported automobiles were sold in 1986: 168,882. What’s even more impressive is the fact that this was accomplished by selling in only 31 of the 50 states. Sales of Hyundai automobiles continued to skyrocket in 1987, setting a new benchmark of 263,610 units after Hyundai began distributing in Chicago.

Where are Hyundai Cars Made Today?

There are now approximately 600 Hyundai dealerships across the country, spread across four areas.

HMA began delivering components to Hyundai’s growing network of dealers in Ontario, California, in 1988. Both the Fountain Valley, California Warranty Technical Center, and the Lawrenceville, Georgia Parts Distribution Center are open for business.

Today, Hyundai also maintains regional offices in Jamesburg, NJ, Austell, GA, Aurora, IL, and Coppell, TX. In addition, the New Jersey plant also features a parts distribution center.
